Fed Up With Instagram? How to Move Your Photos to Pixelfed - CNET
Zettelkasten Automated PostFor those looking to move away from Meta’s Instagram, Pixelfed offers a decentralized, open-source alternative allowing users to import their Instagram posts. Pixelfed, which has grown in popularity lately, operates on a network of community servers, resembling the Mastodon social network, and offers chronological feeds. However, the settings vary per server, and not all of them allow imports. Pixelfed’s importer can only process photos, excluding video posts or reels. Users have to download their Instagram posts and media from their Meta profile to import to Pixelfed.
The process of transferring your Instagram posts to Pixelfed entails several steps. First, you need to download your posts and media from Instagram, a process that’s easier on a computer. From your Meta account, downloads can be configured to include all posts, set the photo quality to high and to be in JSON format. After preparing the download from Meta, sign in to Pixelfed, select the profile import option, locate the downloaded .zip file from Instagram and choose the posts to import, up to 100 at a time. The new posts will contain the same descriptions, hashtags and dates as on Instagram.
