Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg announces end of fact-checking on platform
Zettelkasten Automated PostMeta, the parent company of Instagram and Facebook, is making significant changes to its content moderation policies including the elimination of its fact-checking program, as announced by CEO Mark Zuckerberg. The move towards enhancing free expression will see fact-checkers replaced with community notes, a practice currently used in tech billionaire Elon Musk’s platform. The policy alterations follow a series of changes that Meta has made in recent weeks as it aligns with President-elect Trump. Zuckerberg stated the recent election was a catalyst for these modifications, pointing out that governments and traditional media are influencing the company to censor increasingly more content.
These modifications will apply on both Facebook and Instagram, as well as Threads, which hosts billions of users daily. The platform will shift to its community-based program named “Community Notes," that will depend on users for information or corrections on misleading posts. Joel Kaplan, Meta’s newly named global policy chief, emphasized that the network gives users the power to decide the context of what others should see. Zuckerberg adds Meta will now alter its policies on contentious issues such as immigration and gender to enable people to share their beliefs and experiences freely. Furthermore, Meta will relocate its trust and safety and content moderation team from California to Texas, a move aimed at lessening bias concerns. #Meta #ContentModeration #FreeExpression #CommunityNotes #PolicyChanges
